Building Classroom Champions in Cairns

A new skilling program is giving Cairns school support staff and parents a free pathway to become qualified Teacher Aides, with applications now open for a January 2026 start.

Delivered by local not-for-profit Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) and funded through the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, Classroom Champions aims to meet the growing demand for qualified education support workers across the region.

“Every child in our schools deserves quality educational support, and that starts with having qualified, capable people in our classrooms. We’ve worked closely with local schools to design a program that builds a team of Classroom Champions – people who are invested in our community and committed to supporting students and teachers,” said VPG Operations Manager Emma Takai.

The program supports existing school support staff without formal qualifications, and parents or community members seeking flexible careers that align with school hours and family commitments. Thirty fully funded places are available.

VPG has worked alongside Cairns schools for more than two decades, coordinating career and transition programs and facilitating school-based work experience. The development of Classroom Champions was shaped through conversations with local principals and support staff, who have backed the initiative and recognise the growing need for qualified Teacher Aides.

Participants will complete nationally recognised training in School-Based Education Support, alongside 100 hours of practical classroom experience in local schools. Existing school staff will have their current work hours recognised toward this requirement, providing a fast-tracked pathway to qualification.
The program also includes wraparound coaching, mentoring, and professional development in classroom management, trauma-informed practice, cultural competency, and first aid.

“This program came together with the support of our local schools,” Ms Takai said. “They see the value of investing in and growing their own people, and we’re proud to be part of a community response that opens doors for parents and staff to take that next step in their education careers.”

Applications are now open for Classroom Champions, commencing January 2026 in Cairns. The program is free for eligible participants and offers flexible delivery options to accommodate existing work and family commitments.
