Students at St Mary’s Catholic College participating in the Trade Training Program have joined local businesses across FNQ to commence workplace learning for the next 12 months.
Community-based organisation Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) coordinate the placements for students, connecting local businesses with young talent looking to learn a trade while they finish school.
VPG Operations Manager Emma Takai says workplace learning works.
“This is an opportunity for young people to immerse themselves in the world of work within their chosen field, enhancing their prospects as they transition from education into a trade after they finish school.
“We can’t underestimate how important it is for young people to access on-the-job training so they can gain experience and build the skills they need as they prepare for their transition to working life,” said Ms Takai.
Brenton Hielscher, owner of Hielscher Electrical believes all young people need a chance to get their career started and access on the job training.
“I think it’s important for young people to have the opportunity to learn in the workplace as it provides them with a chance to explore the possible career opportunities available to them and gives them an insight into what’s involved in a trade.
“It provides the student with exposure to workplace practices, employer expectations and the chance to work on their self-development and workplace skills,” says Mr Hielscher.
Mr Hielscher also believes it’s beneficial for the business.
“I was grateful when VPG approached me with the opportunity to host a student, because as a local employer, it allows me the chance to provide students an insight into the Electrical trade and fast-growing Renewable Energy sector.
“It provides us with the chance to understand what our business is looking for in our next round of recruitment.
“It also brings a new perspective to our workplace, and it not only provides the student with an opportunity to learn, but our staff are also provided with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills,” says Mr Hielscher.
Undertaking work placement with Hielscher Electrical is Year 11 student Lucas Skinner.
Mr Skinner says workplace learning is a valuable extension to the school-based training program.
“Learning in the workplace gives me a better understanding of how things actually work.
“I’m looking at it as a great opportunity to gain experience, learn new skills and get my name out to broaden job opportunities after school,” says Mr Skinner.
Ms Takai says there is still plenty of opportunities for businesses to show their support to students of Cairns.
“We invite businesses across all industries to consider providing workplace learning opportunities for our local high school students – whether it be for one week, or one day per week for 12 months,” says Ms Takai.
