Fifteen years ago, school wasn’t Andy’s path; instead, he found himself living on a friend’s couch uncertain about what the future held. Joining the VPG State Funded Get Set for Work (GS4W) program became his turning point, setting him on a path to long term success in both life and work.
Reflecting on his experience with the program, Andy shares, “Everything’s a stepping stone, and I took many of those. I learned so much – about how to be a good person, put myself out there, and get into work. It gave me motivation to go after what I want, helping me get to where I am today.”
With the support and guidance of GS4W, Andy discovered his passion for flora and fauna, leading him to a trainee Ranger opportunity. This marked the beginning of an exciting chapter for Andy. Over the years, he found fulfilment in work aligned with his aspirations.
Building on this foundation, Andy took a positive risk, investing in himself to pursue his true passion in pet grooming and training. Today, he runs his own business, Good Vibes Grooming Studio in Yungaburra, and is thriving in his work and beloved by the local community.
For Colleen Postans, a Learning Coordinator with 17 years of experience, the success of individuals like Andy reaffirms the importance of mentorship and support. “Sometimes young people just need someone in their corner, cheering them on, keeping them on track and accountable, and that’s what we’re here to do,” she says.
The success of Andy, and many others, highlights the tangible long-term benefits of programs like Get Set for Work, which not only transform individual lives but also contribute to the economic and social fabric of our communities.
Locally embedded community organisations like VPG are best placed to deliver real outcomes for youth, and our connection extends well beyond program completion. We share this to showcase the impact of State Skilling programs, empowering individuals and building brighter futures for all.
