Work experience key to young people’s success

Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) has reported an incredible number of businesses in FNQ giving young people work experience placements to aid in their career planning.

To date, in 2019, 400 employers have hosted 886 school students on work experience in Cairns.

“Our Career & Transition Officers Kristina and Leigh do an incredible job of matching students to their industry preferences,

“But our biggest thanks needs to go to the business community of Cairns who regularly take in our young people, we are deeply grateful,” said Maryanne Tranter, CEO of Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG).

This week another 300 students from Cairns State High School students are out in the community on work experience placement.

“We can’t underestimate how important it is for young people to learn these transferrable skills as they prepare for their transition to work life.”

Ms Tranter says while participation has been really great this year, there is always room for more businesses to get involved given the large number of high school graduates entering the community every year.

“We invite businesses across all industries to get involved to provide opportunities for these students to have a real sense of what it’s like to be in a workplace every day and get a feel for the types of roles they see themselves doing for a career. The best way to do that is to be exposed to the real world of business,” said Maryanne Tranter.

The team at VPG say navigating career options can be a challenging process for young people, particularly today when there are so many different options leading to career outcomes.

“We encourage you to start having conversations with your teenager about what they might want to do when they finish school as early as when they are in years 9 and 10. Exploring their options early will help them focus and prepare for the future as they embark on their senior high school years and make subject selections relevant to their aspirations,” she said.
