VPG Participant Catherine’s Transition to Work Success

“VPG got me somewhere I didn’t think I could possibly get to” ~ Catherine, VPG participant engaging in the Transition to Work (TtW) Program.

Relocating from Cooktown to Cairns, Catherine was referred to the TtW program at VPG to build her work readiness skills and connect with local employment opportunities.

Through the program Catherine participated in intensive pre-employment training, accessed resume and cover letter support, and received guided job search assistance to identify employment opportunities aligned to her interests and capabilities.

Through career exploration activities, it was evident Catherine’s passion and talent was in creative arts. Keeping her employment prospects open, Catherine was eager to apply for work that would help her achieve her short-term goal: earn money and save for a car.

Whilst actively searching for jobs in retail and hospitality, Catherine’s TtW Coordinator connected her with a traineeship opportunity at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF). Excited by the prospects of kick starting her career in an industry of her dreams, Catherine applied with the support of her TtW Coordinator.

Successfully securing an interview, Catherine worked closely with her TtW Coordinator in preparation to maximise her potential to succeed. Her hard work and determination were recognised, and she was selected as the Exhibitions Assistant for CIAF.

The six-month paid traineeship has provided Catherine with a valuable opportunity to gain work experience within the arts, build skills in administration, network with
industry representatives and connect with her culture. CIAF Project Coordinator, Megsi O’Toole has praised Catherine for her efforts and contribution to the team.

“To say that we are delighted to have Catherine here would be an understatement. We absolutely love her and couldn’t be more thrilled to have her on our team,”

“Catherine is always courteous, prompt, reliable and just the most genuine person – with a great work ethic” says Ms. O’Toole.

The opportunity has boosted Catherine’s confidence and sparked fierce passion to continue striving for success.
